I just recently got into this obscure glam-rocker named Rene Berg. He was a member of Hanoi Rocks for a short time, and had a very long career despite releasing very little. I've been listening to his solo album from 1992, and it reminds me of Bash & Pop a bit. I thought it was maybe just the Faces influence, but the more i listen i see that his voice is similar as well. Then, I noticed something else. Go to www.myspace.com/reneberg and listen to the first bit of "If I had Wings." Then listen to the beginning of "Not a Moment too Soon." I can't believe how similar they are. Particularly listen to the guitar picking and the bass. The first three bass notes in each song are exactly the same. I'd be surprised if Tommy knew who this guy was but it's possible.

A glam rocker who sounds like Tommy. Theres something very wrong with that. It's not that strange...he is in Guns n Roses. Also, Hanoi Rocks was a huge influence on GN'R, so there's a bit of a connection. I don't expect to see tommy in feather boas and teased hair anytime soon though.

Hmm... you're lucky I'm in a good mood. Referring to GN'R as glam rock is a bad move when I'm around, because... well, they're not.

Well there was that one photo... Dressing like an idiot doesn't make you glam rock... it just makes you look like an idiot.

No, they weren't Glam per-se, but they were heavily influenced by it. They also certainly played the scene.

I don't know that they were influenced by glam so much as influenced by the same things that influenced the glam bands.
But you're right that they did share the scene with them. But at the time a lot of people saw them as the anti-thesis of it. Its only by comparison with later bands that they got put into the same catergory.

Didn't Axl say that Mike Monroe (Hanoi Rocks) was his biggest influence vocally? I don't remember, but i thought i read that. It also boils down to what you're definition of "Glam" is. A lot of people consider David Bowie, T. Rex and NY Dolls "Glam."

You have a point there, I was thinking more of 80's glam than 70's glam. Although my sister likes to try and deny T.Rex were glam because she loves them and claims to hate glam. But my sister is also a musical idiot.
I think you're right about the Hanoi Rocks thing. GNR were definately fans of them, and I think Uzi Suicude (GNRs label) actually put out one of their albums.

See, unlike your sister, I love Glam. More the punk rock glam that GNR was probably into though. I love Johnny Thunders, Hanoi Rocks (the first band to really bridge Glam Rock and Punk in the 80's). I also do like my Ratt, Poison and Cinderella, though i'm not always happy about admitting it.

Actually, it was the punk rock glam that GN'R were into, too. Hanoi Rocks, New York Dolls and Johnny Thunders. Actually, both Duff and Tommy were hugely influenced by Johnny Thunders - both covering You Can't Put Your Arms Around A Memory. If you listen to GN'Rs covers album, The Spaghetti Incident, that's their influences right there. And they - like me - had a deep loathing of the likes of Poison.

But on the other hand Axl recently said he likes WASP.
And it wouldn't surpise me if Duff and Tommy shared a lot of influences.

Duff and Tommy were both in punk bands and were both in the American Hardcore movie, which i thought was funny. I wonder if they'd get along? I personally love the Spaghetti Incident. I know a lot of people dislike it, but it's cool for what it is. I mostly listen to old punk, so it's great to hear GNR's take on those songs.

He's never mentioned it but it wouldn't suprise me if Duff was a Replacements fan. Personally I think they'd get along very well, they might have felt obligated to but they've both said nice things about each other in the past and they do seem to have a lot in common.
Also I've never been able to see why so many people didn't like TSI. I may be biased because anything that involves Duff singing (and isn't Lonely Tonite or Could It Be U) I'm probably going to like, but I also think it was cool to hear some of their less obvious influeces, and how they interpreted the songs.
I suppose maybe if people aren't into punk stuff, or they were expecting it to sound like GNRs other albums they wouldn't enjoy it.
