So I'm drastically lacking in ownership and knowledge of the Replacements stuff.
Can anyone recommend a good album to start with? Or just some ideas on the subject.

Tim, Let it Be, Pleased to Meet Me, and All Shook Down are masterpieces.

I only have Let It Be so far, but I've heard many many good things about Tim. I'll probably be getting that or Sorry Ma, Forgot To Take Out The Trash next (punkier stuff on that one). Tommy himself listed Tim as one of the records he's most proud of along with Village Gorilla Head and the new GN'R record.

I was going to say I seem to remember Tommy saying good things about Tim.
Looks like that might be a good place to start.

Let it Be is better. It's the essential Replacements album, and it has more bass only spots so you can hear Tommy better.

Plus, Let It Be[ /i]has "Tommy Gets His Tonsils Out."
I would say for someone with no Mats albums to start with Pleased to Meet Me.

Well now I'm stuck. lol
Except that from my perspective more bass, or more audible bass, is a major, major plus (as I'm sure you'll all discover I'm more than a little obsessed with the instrement), and its even better when its Tommy playing it. So that could prove to be a deciding factor.
I suppose its good that they have a range of great stuff, and since I'll end up with all of it eventually (or at least all the stuff Tony doesn't get first) it doesn't matter too much.

How about the best of that just came out....
It has most of the best tracks and even includes Paul and Tommy songs from last year.

It was only Paul and Tommy? I assumed Chris worked on those two songs, too.

It was only Paul and Tommy? I assumed Chris worked on those two songs, too. Chris sang back ups. He hasn't played drums in years. They were essentially Paul, Tommy and Josh Freese. Paul and Tommy also did two new tracks on the Open Season soundtrack. "Love you in the Fall" and "Right to Arm Bears."

In general I'm not a big fan of Best Of's, partially because it tends to be the tracks that get left off them that are my favourites, and partially because if I like a band I'll usually end up with everything they've done, which makes the Best Of seem a little pointless.

"Let it Be", "Tim" & "Pleased to Meet Me" are considered by most, the holy trinity.
& IMO, Hootenanny is not to be missed.

This site has a few MP3's from The Replacements' last show. They used to have the entire set, but now only a handfull of the MP3's are still available. Not their greatest performance....still a fun listen. pressrandom.com/page/2/

Thanks! Is that the show where the band were gradually replaced by their roadies? I've been hoping to find a video of that one, along with some of their really early ones.

Let it Be is great. I love Hootenany also. It has some classic Mats songs including Color Me Impressed on it. A very fun album.
